Did you know that the average daily duration of programming dedicated to bad news equals that of a “normal” newscast? The Joy of Living art collective in Pianezza (TO) is outstanding for the topic, inviting us to set aside negative news.

Perhaps it aims to bring a bit of positivity to the Christmas wainting season in these challenging times. 

On the Way to the Exhibition 

I chose artworks dedicated to family. No matter how it is composed, family welcomes us in this world and helps us growing. Many happy memories are tied to our family and childhood.

Motherhood is a unique emotion. It is the joy of watching a young life growing. The scene captures the first months of life: a mother holding her baby girl. It is moment of pure love, joy, and devotion.

Fatherhood is unique and authentic emotion, just like motherhood. The scene depicts a father (my husband) in a tender embrace with his little daughter. For him, she will always be his “little girl,” even when he walks her down the aisle in her wedding day.

How wonderful it is to be a child!  there are no worries, no obligations; the days are full of discoveries and joy. The joy of children is pure joy for life! This piece collects the sketch portraits of my daughter Caterina during her early years.

Matite in viaggio 2024

“Come sono arrivata a questo punto?” mi chiedevo in un momento di pura disperazione. In quella giornata uggiosa torinese ho realizzato di non poter andare a Venezia alla mostra più importante dell’anno. Ho rinunciato a Paratissima di Torino per poter essere di persona a Matite in viaggio 2024, ma tutto ha preso una piega inaspettata.

Una serie di sfortunati eventi

A maggio mi sono candidata per ben due categorie della collettiva con le pagine di uno sketchbook ancora in lavorazione.  Evviva! Mi hanno selezionata per entrambe. Avrei esposto sia a tema “Porti di mare” e nella categoria generale.

Ho deciso di andare di persona a Venezia ad incontrare pubblico, critica e colleghi artisti rinunciando a qualsiasi altro progetto in concomitanza. Per una volta volevo fare le cose “per bene”.

La 14ma edizione della collettiva “Matite in viaggio 2024” si è svolta dal 25 ottobre al 10 novembre. Come dalla tradizione era ospitata dalle sale espositive del terzo piano al Centro Culturale Candiani (P.le Luigi Candiani, 7 Venezia Mestre).

Per una serie delle coincidenze dell’ultimo minuto non ho potuto partecipare all’inaugurazione il 26 ottobre. Neanche il weekend successivo e quello dopo.

Mal comune…

Non sono stata l’unica a non riuscire ad arrivare a Venezia. La mia collega ed amica di Mosca (Russia) Julia Bolshakova per via della situazione geopolitica non ha potuto viaggiare. Spedire le sue opere è diventato una vera epopea! Dato che le spedizioni dalla Russia in Europa non venivano gestite ci ho pensato io a stampare le copie delle opere  e spedirle da Torino.

Nonostante tutto grazie alle foto degli amici artisti ho potuto esserci anche se non di persona.

Ci riproverò l’anno prossimo. Almeno un buon proposito per il 2025 c’è l’ho.

Venice sketching collective 2024

“How did I end up here?” I was wondering in a moment of pure desperation. In that rainy day in Turin, I realized that I couldn’t go to Venice to the most important exhibition of the year. I had given up Paratissima art fair in Turin to attend Venice sketching collective 2024, but everything took an unexpected turn.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In May, I applied for two categories of the collective with the pages from the sketchbook still in progress.  I was selected for both. My artworks would be exposed two rooms: “Seaports” and “Main category”.

I decided to go to Venice to meet the public, critics, and fellow artists, giving up any other art project scheduled at the same time. For once, I wanted to do things “right”.

The 14th edition of the collective exhibition “Matite in Viaggio 2024” (from Italian “travelling pencils”) took place from October 25 to November 10. As per tradition, it was hosted in the exhibition halls on the third floor of the Candiani Cultural Center (P.le Luigi Candiani, 7 Venice Mestre).

Due to last minute problems, I couldn’t attend the opening on 26 October, nor could I make it the following weekend, and the one after that.

Friends in art

My colleague and friend from Moscow (Russia), Julia Bolshakova, also couldn’t come to Venice for due to the international situation. To send her works to Venice became very tricky! As because the war in Ukraine no courier could send the sketches from Russia to Italy,  I took care of printing copies and sending them.

Thanks to social media and the photos shared by artist friends, I was able to see the collective and have a sort of virtual visit.

I have already a plan for 2025: I will go to Venice whatever it takes!

Che cosa è Inktober?

Inktober è Il challenge creativo internazionale unisce gli illustratori da tutto il mondo. Tutto semplice: ottobre, 31 giorni, 31 parole, 31 illustrazioni. Ecco la lista “ufficiale” del 2024.

L’iniziativa è nata nel 2009 come sfida individuale dell’illustratore americano Jake Parker, illustratore di concept dei cartoni animati “Era glaciale”, “Rio” ecc,  che voleva fare pratica con la tecnica dell’inchiostro e sviluppare l’abitudine di disegnare tutti i giorni. Inktober è diventato una challenge a livello mondiale con una crescente partecipazione anche in Italia. Ogni artista può scegliere la propria lista da utilizzare al posto di quella “ufficiale”

Guess, what was my subject this year! Inktober 2024 was cats and ink only. This is how Inktober became Cattober. The Cat-tree has also find space and time to bloom. But let’s see it step by step.

What is Inktober?

Inktober is the international art challenge that connects a lot of illustrators around the world. 31 days, 31 prompts, paper and ink. These are the official prompts of 2024:

Jake Parker, the concept illustrator of cartoons “Rio”, “Ice age” etc,  created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavour with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. Any artist can use the own prompt list instead of the “official” one.

It was impossble not to draw at least one cat-slower among cat illustrations.

Sketchbook olimpico Parigi 2024

Sono convinta che le cose migliori capitano per caso. Così è stato con lo Sketchbook olimpico Parigi 2024.

Come si fa

Per tanti aspetti un “plein-air” davanti alla TV è abbastanza estremo. Poca superficie di appoggio, inquadratura quella “che passa il convento” della reggia, tempi limitati e nessuna possibilità di fermarsi per capire come è fatto il soggetto o semplicemente per prendere il fiato.

Inoltre, la maggior parte della cerimonia si è svolta dopo il calare del sole e lo sketching notturno è decisamente sfidante.
Nonostante ciò, restano invariati i passaggi fondamentali di urban sketching: osservazione, linea base, linea tonale e colori o semplicemente ombre.

Paso dopo passo le pagine si sono riempite dei disegni con le linee di base sottili:

La mattina dopo ho ritoccato le bozze con le linee tonali. Qui ho messo a confronto il disegni prima e dopo il ritocco con le linee tonali.

Per poi aggiungere i colori la sera dello stesso giorno. Ecco la versione quasi completata dello sketchbook:

E’ possibile che farò ancora qualche ritocco di luci ed ombre.

In many ways a “plein air” in front of the TV is quite tricky. The framing is decided by the live broadcast, the time is limited and, aspecially, there is no possibility to stop and study how the subject is or simply to breath.

An important part of the ceremony took place after the sunset. The night sketching is rather challenging. Despite this, the fundamental steps of live sketching remain the same: observation, basic line sketch, tonal line, and colors or shadows. If you are very tired, you can make the steps 2 and 3 the day after. They are a sort of post-production in skethching.

Step by step

Basic line sketch. The most difficult part is to catch the essential lines and proportions of the subject and put them on paper.

Tonal drawing. The morning after. Watch here the sketches before and after i added the tonal lines:

Colours. The evening of the day after. If you do not like colours it’s anough to add shadows. this is the almost final version of the olimpic sketchbook.

Well, probabily I am still in time to add some lights and shadows.

100 giorni di sumi-e

Quest’anno il mio progetto è imparare le basi della pittura giapponese ad inchiostro per rendere più essenziali ed immediato i miei schizzi dal vero. Saranno quindi 100 giorni di sumi-e. Mi sono ispirata ai grandi maestri Giapponesi di calligrafia, illustrazione ed incisione.

What is the 100 day project?

#The100DayProject is a free, global art project that takes place online. Every year, thousands of people all around the world commit to 100 days of creating. Anyone can participate.

The idea is simple: choose a creative project, do it every single day for 100 days, and share your process on your social accounts using the hashtag #The100DayProject. In 2024 The 100 Day Project started 18th February.

Headline of the 100 day project 2024

The seeds of The100DayProject began in 2008 at an artist retreat near Traverse City, Michigan. The 5-day retreat was co-lead by artists Louisa Barkalow and Ann Russ. Participants were invited to hang a simple piece of artwork they made each day on a piece of twine strung across a doorway at the retreat house. The purpose of this simple, warm-up exercise was to get the creative juices flowing. 

In 2012, Ann Russ approached Tiina Harris, Director of the Marquette Arts & Culture Center (MACC) about having a 100 day project exhibit at the gallery there. In October 2013, an exhibit “The100DayProject:  The Art of Practice and the Practice of Art” was installed in the MACC gallery and generated significant interest.

Since January 2014, 100 day projects have launched annually. Ann continues to support it as volunteer co-organizer. The 100DayProject has since spread beyond its Midwest roots and is now a global phenomenon.

One week 100 people was the first occasion to use the new media in the sketching. The 100 people of this year are inspired to Japanese ink painting sumi-e. I tried to keep only the essential parts of every portrait.

Despite complicated internal situation I was back home to Moscow to sketch my native city. So it became Moscow urban sketching tour of 4-16 April when I tried to use the sumi-e srokes for city skethes.

Так что же такое 100-дневный проект и для чего он нужен? Начало было положено в 2008 году американскими художницами Луизой Баокалоу и Энн Русс. С 2014 году челлендж проводится ежегодно и со временем достиг мировых маштабов. Идея проста: выбирайте творческий проект и посвещайте ему не менее 15 минут в день в течении 100 дней.
